Exercise and Sport Science majors receive the requisite, professional preparation to graduate equipped with the ability to pursue exciting careers from a dynamic sport and fitness industry. Career opportunities for EXSS majors include such areas as Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Coach/Director, Athletic Trainer, Commercial/Community Recreation Director, Corporate Fitness Instructor/Manager, Dietician, Health/Fitness Consultant, Sport Marketing/Public Relations Specialist, Personal Trainer, Sport Facility Manager, Sports Official, Fitness/Health Club Manager, Sporting Goods Associate/Manager, Sports and Fitness Nutritionist, and Strength/Conditioning Specialist. EXSS majors obtain the educational foundation to pursue advanced degrees in related fields at graduate school or continued education necessary to pursue careers as Sports Agent, Physical Therapist, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Exercise Physiologist, or Sports Psychologist. Students majoring in Exercise and Sport Science have the opportunity to select from four different areas of specialization: Teacher Certification, Athletic Training, Sport Management, and Recreation Leadership. Each area of specialization provides foundational components as well as emphasis on specific curriculum designed to develop graduates for entrance into a multi-faceted, sport/fitness-related career.

Lifetime Fitness
A comprehensive course designed for the student desiring an in-depth understanding of the concepts of physical fitness including strength development, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, body compostion, stress, mood modifiers, and nutrition. The course will educate the student on various fitness principles and guide them in developing their own individualized exercise regimen. A variety of energetic, practical experiences are incorporated to enhance the lectures. Upon the conclusion of the course the student should be prepared for a lifetime of exercise. Lab fee.

Musical Movement
Analysis of movement fundamentals and study of rhythmic compositions in folk and square dance. Lab fee.

Low Organized Activities
Games and teaching strategies for teaching elementary physical education. Involves the philosophy of “New PE” and Developmentally Appropriate Activities. Designed for elementary education majors. Lab fee.

Volleyball
Basic instruction in volleyball with presentation of skills and rules designed to give the student a laboratory experience in team play. Lab fee.

Soccer
Basic instruction in soccer with presentation of skills and rules designed to give the student a laboratory experience in team play. Lab fee.
EXSS 1108
Rollerblading
Basic instruction in and skills of in-line skating. Special emphasis on cardiovascular conditioning, motor skills, and game transference through selected laboratory experiences. Students must provide their own helmets and rollerblades (in-line skates). Lab fee.
EXSS 1110
Basic Tennis
Knowledge of tennis rules and officiating with instruction and practice in the skills of the game, including the service, forehand and backhand ground strokes, and volleys. Lab fee.
EXSS 1111
Intermediate Tennis
A continuation of EXSS 1110 with additional tennis skills such as the lob, overhead smash, drop shots, and experience in competitive play.

Basic Swimming
Instruction in basic strokes, elementary diving, and safety procedures leading to American Red Cross “Beginner” and “Advanced Beginner” certification. Lab fee.
EXSS 1121
Intermediate Swimming
Review of safety procedures, instruction in basic kicks and arm strokes, five basic swimming strokes, and diving, leading to American Red Cross “Intermediate” and “Swimmer” certification.

EXSS 2100
Introduction to Atheltic Training
For Pre-Athletic Training Majors. The course will introduce students to the academic and clinical aspects of the Athletic Training education program. The course is utilized as part of the rigorous student evaluation process before formal entrance into the athletic training education program. Topics covered will include requirements to gain entrance to the UMHB Athletic Training program including resume and application, technical standards for the Athletic Training program, basic taping skills, and universal precautions. A minimum of 100 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to complete this course.

EXSS 2101
Sophomore Lab/Practicum I
Gaining Athletic Training clinical experience with emphasis on the development of orthopedic evaluation of the lower body is the objective of this course. The students develop proficiencies in this given area through instruction and supervised practice. A minimum of 210 or a maximum of 300 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to successfully complete this course. Corequisite: EXSS 3355.
Prerequisites: EXSS 2100, EXSS 2350, and acceptance into the UMHB ATEP. Fee.
EXSS 2102
Sophomore Lab/Practicum II
Gaining Athletic Training clinical experience with emphasis on the development of orthopedic evaluation of the upper body is the objective of this course. The students develop proficiencies in this given area through instruction and supervised practice. A minimum of 210 or a maximum of 300 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to successfully complete this course. Corequisite: EXSS 3356.

EXSS 2106
Flag Football
Basic instruction in six man football fundamentals and techniques designed to give the student a laboratory experience in the sport. Lab fee.
EXSS 2110
Spinning
Designed for both the beginning spinner (stationary cycling) as well as advanced spinners which allows all who participate to spin at their own maximum fitness capacity. The bulk of the course will be spent working out on the spinning bikes. However, we will also address the benefits of spinning, proper bike fit, pedaling technique, bike positions, heart rate zones, principles of aerobic and anaerobic training, hydration, nutrition, and stretching.

Bowling
Basic instruction in the fundamentals and techniques of bowling with opportunity for participation. Knowledge of rules and scoring. Lab fee.
EXSS 2115
Tumbling and Gymnastics
Instruction in performance of simple stunts; individual, dual, and group tumbling activities; trampoline; uneven parallel bars; vaulting; and balance beam with stress on safety, self-confidence, coordination, and suppleness of movement. Lab fee.

Conditioning
Fundamentals of body conditioning with special emphasis on physical fitness and motor fitness through selected laboratory experience such as isometrics, isotonics, and circuit training. May be repeated once for credit. Lab fee.

Modified Physical Education
A class for students needing modified activities because of limitations due to physical status. May be repeated once for credit. Lab fee.

Aerobics
Includes a pretest of cardiovascular fitness to aid in developing an individualized aerobics program. Activity prescriptions will be selected from walking, running, cycling, swimming, and basketball. Lab fee.

Weight Training
A progressive conditioning course that introduces the student to isotonic muscle contractions for the muscular development of strength and endurance. In addition, the course emphasizes weight room safety, proper spotting, and techniques in weight lifting. Lab fee.

Introduction to Exercise and Sport Science
An orientation course which includes a study of the history, principles, objectives, philosophy, current trends, periodicals, and books of the professional field.
EXSS 2350
Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries
This course is designed to introduce students interested in coaching athletics to prevention and care of injuries and conditions related to athletic participation. Emergency management, injury signs and symptoms, basic injury care, rehabilitation and taping and wrapping techniques are also covered.

Basic Athletic Training
This course is designed to expose the students to the six domains of athletic training. This course is designed to expose the student to the athletic training profession and injury prevention and care. Principles and techniques of the science of athletic training are applied (i.e. taping, bandaging, first aid, acute care, injury recognition, injury rehab, etc.).

A study of factors that contribute to personal health, including nutrition, diet, weight control, emotional health, stress, proper use of drugs, and medical and dental services.

Medical Terminology in Athletic Training
This course emphasizes medical terminology used in the profession of athletic training. The course will utilize SOAP notes and other medical documentation to enhance communication between healthcare professionals.

This course emphasizes Safety, CPR, and First Aid for the allied healthcare professional in the Community, School, and Athletic healthcare settings.

Junior Lab/Practicum I
Provides Athletic Training students the opportunity to further their practical skills in athletic injury rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise. A minimum of 210 and a maximum of 300 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to successfully complete this course.

EXSS 3107
Advanced Aerobic Fitness Training
A capstone fitness class required for EXSS majors and minors. Emphasis is placed on distance running, cardiovascular health, nutrition, and hydration. Students are expected to participate in training sessions and log 50 miles of running outside of the class.
Prerequisites: Intermediate fitness level required. Lab fee.
EXSS 3108
Triathlon Training
This class introduces students to basic triathlon training principles to include sports nutrition, swim training, racing strategies, nutrition/hydration, transitions, and periodization principles. The course includes basic bicycle maintenance and equipment needs. Students will be expected to participate in training sessions and one triathlon event during the semester.
Prerequisites: Deep water swimming skills and basic fitness level required. Students are expected to provide some of their own equipment. Lab fee.

Beginning Golf
Basic instruction in the use of irons, woods, and the putter. Application of the rules, proper club selection, and experience in competition is required. Lab fee.

Intermediate Golf
A continuation of EXSS 3116 with additional skills.

EXSS 3118
Handball and Paddleball
Basic instruction in the fundamentals of handball and/or paddleball. Knowledge of rules and scoring included. Lab fee.
EXSS 3119
Badminton
Basic instruction in the fundamentals and techniques of badminton, including the forehand and backhand drives, clears, smash, drop shot, and service. Knowledge of the rules, strategy, and practice in officiating. Lab fee.
EXSS 3122
Angling
Instruction in the use of light tackle and a presentation of several methods that may be used in fresh-water fishing. Emphasis upon lake fishing and practical experience. Lab fee.
EXSS 3123
Kayak and Canoeing
Basic instruction in kayaking and canoeing skills and safety. Focus will be on basic kayak and canoe techniques in lake, river and stream navigation.

Professional Leadership Experiences in Physical Education
Apprentice leadership experience in guiding individuals and groups in motor skill learning processes. This course is required for students with a first or second teaching field in Physical Education and Recreation. May be repeated once for credit. Fee.

EXSS 3202
Junior Lab/Practicum
The course provides Athletic Training students the opportunity to further their practical skills in athletic injury care and therapeutic modalities. A minimum of 210 and a maximum of 300 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to successfully complete this course. An additional hour has been added to this course to provide adequate instruction and evaluation of assigned clinical proficiencies.

EXSS 3210
Adventure Activities
Basic and intermediate instruction and application of Adventure Activities including kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, wading, navigation, training, performance and strategies. Emphasis is on endurance training methods, team dynamics, specific sport skills and basic sport nutrition. Students are exposed to the activities through an on and off-campus, 10-day field experience.
Prerequisites: Deep water swimming skills and intermediate fitness level required. Students are expected to provide their own mountain bike and helmet. Lab fee required.

Activity Methods for Majors
This course is designed to provide students with learning experiences in teaching skills, understanding the knowledge of the activity or sport, understanding the rules of the sport, and an appreciation for the basic skills in a variety of individual/dual lifetime sports.

Communication in Sport
An investigation of public relations and communication practices in sport including reputation management, media relations, crisis communications, community relations, and fostering relationships with key publics. Emphasis placed upon interpersonal, small group, and mass communication, electronic media applications, public speaking, and written communications in the sport industry.

EXSS 3352
Administration and Education in Athletic Training
This course examines the responsibilities of the certified Athletic Trainer as an educator and administrator. Topics include state licensure, administration, budget, staffing, legal liability, and athletic insurance.

Nutrition (For Non-Science Majors)
This course involves the study of nutrients and their function in promoting health throughout the life span. Included are standards for consumer selection of a proper diet and analysis of nutrition-related health problems.

Advanced Athletic Training I
Orthopedic assessment of the lower body. Recognition and assessment of athletic injury to the lower body while utilizing evaluation tools such as goniometeres, tape measures, reflex hammers, etc.

Advanced Athletic Training II
Orthopedic assessment of the upper body. Recognition and assessment of athletic injury to the upper body while utilizing tools such as goniometers, tape measures, reflex hammers, etc.

EXSS 3357
Human Pathophysiology and Pharmacology
A study in the use and misuse of medicines in Athletics. Topics to include drug testing, drug classification, drug vehicles and mode of introduction into body, tolerance, side effects, street drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) versus prescription drugs. Other areas touched upon are dispensing of OTCs, ethical and legal issues and the role of the certified Athletic Trainer.

Sport Venue/Event Management
A study of the responsibilities of facility managers including event planning, security, administration, sales/marketing, finance/budgeting, human resources, legal issues, risk management, operations/maintenance, systems planning, site selection/design, and construction issues. Students are exposed to practical procedures involving applied theory to actual practice in solving facility management dilemmas.

Sociology of Sport
A study of sport function from an economic, political, sociological, and educational perspective. Includes examination of social influences regarding mass media, race, gender, and group behavior in relation to sport as a microcosm of society.

Governance in Sport
An investigation of the various agencies governing sport. Includes an examination of the agencies, their authority, organizational structure, and their function.

Sport Promotion/Marketing
A focus on applying the fundamental concepts of marketing, including product, price, public relations, promotions, sales, and advertising in relation to the sport industry.

EXSS 3375
Economics in Sport
An examination of core economic concepts and applications within the sport industry including industrial organization, public finance, labor relations, non-profit entities, and economic theory applied to sport manufacturing and service industries, professional and intercollegiate sports, and stadiums/arenas applications. Economic principles studied include micro/macro perspectives, economic growth, economic impact, and competitive strategy.

A survey of the principles that constitute the foundation of sound athletic coaching techniques and management. Special emphasis will be placed on the psychological aspects of coaching and sports performance.

Application of the basic mechanics of human motion to physical education activities. Includes a study of gross anatomy with application of the anatomical and mechanical principles involved in human movement.

A study of the adjustments made by the body and its systems to exercise. Emphasis will be placed on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. Training programs and variables impacting upon human performance will be considered.

Senior Lab/Practicum I
For third-year Athletic Training students to start integrating their athletic training experiences with their athletic training skills. Comprehensive checking and proficiency of athletic training knowledge in general medical conditions, general health assessment, pathology and etc. will be examined. A minimum of 210 and a maximum of 300 clock hours of clinical experience will be required by the student to successfully complete this course.

EXSS 4103
Allied Healthcare Professions
A weekly seminar in Allied Healthcare Professions. This seminar provides contact with a variety of allied healthcare professions that an ATC (Athletic Training Certified) may utilize as a component of the overall treatment of client(s). Professionals will be selected from, but not limited to, radiologists, nurses, neurologists, trauma specialists, massage therapists, and dietitians. A general medical rotation of a minimum of 30 hours will be required for this course.

Senior Seminar
Senior Seminar is a capstone course designed to prepare those students seeking teacher certification in Exercise and Sport Science to successfully complete the TExES examination. Emphasis will be given to testing strategies, study material, and practice questions. A practice examination will be administered at the completion of the course.

Current Research Issues and Trends in Athletic Training
The student will develop the ability to design, perform, and critically analyze current published research gaining a thorough understanding of current methods, needs in the field, and research quality and use in practice.

Bicycling
This class introduces students to basic cycling. The focus is on road and mountain biking training principles to include basic bike handling skills, equipment needs, training principles, mechanics, nutrition, and safety. Emphasis is placed on touring, endurance and sprint training, racing strategies, nutrition/hydration, periodization, and basic safety principles. Students are expected to participate in training sessions and one cycling event during the semester.
Prerequisites: Minimal bicycling skills and basic fitness level required. Students are expected to provide their own bicycle. Lab fee.
EXSS 4111
Rock Climbing
This class introduces students to basic rock climbing principles, including techniques and maneuvers, knots, anchoring and belaying systems, rappelling, and categories of climbing. In addition, students become familiar with history, safety, and ethics as well as equipment, including nomenclature, use, and care. Emphasis is placed on top-roped climbing systems and bouldering. Basic fitness level is required for participation in this class. Students are required to participate in a 3-day field trip. Lab fee.

Snow Skiing
This course introduces students to basic and intermediate snow-skiing. The course material will include basic equipment purchase and rental, proper skiwear, ski area navigation, safety and injury prevention, basic fitness, nutrition and hydration. Emphasis will be placed on downhill skiing, basic form, nutrition/hydration and basic safety principles. Students are expected to participate in daily training sessions and make every attempt to progress in skill level during the course. No minimal skiing skills are necessary.

Lifeguard Training
Instruction and skills training leading to American Red Cross nonsurf “Lifeguard Training” certificate.
Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross “Standard First Aid” and “Adult CPR” or “Community CPR” certifications and adequate swimming skills. Lab fee.

Water Safety Instructor
Instruction and skills leading to “Water Safety Instructor” certification by the American Red Cross.

Team Activites
The course will focus on the organization, planning and implementation of large group activities. The course is designed to prepare students to manage team recreational activities in camp, church, school or city recreation settings.

EXSS 4345
Child and Adolescent Skills
Child and Adolescent Skills is a course designed to teach the strategies of “New PE” and the concepts of Developmentally Appropriate Physical Education. The students will learn to develop and implement lesson plans based on locomotor, nonlocomotor, and manipulative skills for both the elementary and secondary level. Emphasis will be given to the methodology used to successfully teach skill development.

EXSS 4350
Principles and Techniques of Strength Training and Conditioning
The purpose of this course is to study current principles and procedures essential to strength training and conditioning practices. Emphasis is placed on the development and practical applications of aerobic conditioning, joint flexibility, muscular strength, power, and endurance programs. This course will serve as a preparatory course for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification exam.

Athletic Injury Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Exercise
This course introduces the athletic training student to athletic injury rehabilitation. Treatment goal development, documentation, and therapeutic exercise are emphasized.
Prerequisites: EXSS 3356. Corequisite: EXSS 3101.
EXSS 4353
Athletic Injury Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Modalities
This course extends the discussion of athletic injury rehabilitation from therapeutic exercise to therapeutic modalities. Treatment goal development, documentation, and therapeutic modality indications and contraindications are emphasized.

EXSS 4358
Essentials of Health and Physical Education
A study of the essential elements of both health and physical education in grades K-6. Emphasis will be placed upon how each of the essential elements may be fulfilled. Students will be expected to participate in physical activities in this class.

A study of the development, practice, and application of moral values as applied to sport and business.

Leadership Principles in Sport
An examination of the theory and practice of leadership principles in sport management.

Field Experience
The field experience is the capstone of the sport management major. This experience is actual work in a sport management setting. Final agreements and arrangements are subject to approval from the program director. Evaluation and direction will be given from the program director with appropriate supervision provided by an on-site professional. 400 hours of hands-on field experience subsequent to the senior year must be accumulated under the supervision of a qualified on-site professional.

Sport Finance
A study of basic financial concepts relating to the sport industry, including issues, managerial accounting practices, financial systems and business structure, capital structuring, budgeting, and principles of financial analysis.

Legal Aspects of Sport
A study of legal implications of tort and liability law for education and sport-related industries. Includes an analysis of specific issues, court cases, and court decisions addressed by the American legal system.

EXSS 4392
Tests and Measurements in Exercise and Sport Science
Tests and Measurement is designed to teach the student the foundational theory of measurement and evaluation including reliability, validity, objectivity, and relevance. Practical application of test construction and test analysis will be an integral part of the course. Descriptive and inferential statistical procedures will be addressed.

Principles of Adapted and Therapeutic Physical Education
A course designed to teach the student the practical application of methods used for inclusion of all individuals in a physical activity setting. Focus of the course will include redefining ability levels, overcoming barriers in physical activity, functional approaches to modifications, program planning and implementation, and application of inclusive practices in teaching physical activity. Practical field based experience is required.

Exercise Testing and Prescription
The purpose of this course is to teach students how to use relevant fitness testing equipment and prescribe appropriate exercise program based on fitness evaluations. Students will learn the guidelines and protocols for safe and effective exercise testing for normal and special populations.

Motor Development
