Students Serve during Spring Break

Belton, Texas -Over 120 students and adults from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will be serving in missions during Spring Break, March 14-23.

Many of the students will be headed to South Padre Island to participate in Beach Reach. This program, in its 28th year, is organized by the Baptist Student Ministry of West Texas A & M and includes groups from university campuses nation-wide. UMHB will participate for the fifth year, joining more than 400 other BSM students to meet the practical and spiritual needs of the over 80,000 college students converging on South Padre Island.

The students will be handing out sunscreen and bottled water, visiting with students on the beach who gather around special sand sculptures, providing rides in the middle of the night in order to get Spring Breakers safely to their destinations, offering free pancake breakfasts and cleaning the beaches each morning.

According to BSM Director Shawn Shannon, the students involved in Beach Reach last year felt that they made a difference in the lives of many students. Students have been training and preparing for the past 7 weeks.

"We are there as a present and tangible reminders of the value that God places on a human soul," said Shannon. "Students are not always making the wisest decisions while at South Padre. We are there to offer sane and safe sanctuary, to build relationships, to rescue people out of potentially dangerous situations. We hope and pray that our service to them will build a bridge between their lives and the love of God."

Several UMHB students will travel to Juarez, Mexico, with Antioch Community Church of Belton. Others will travel to Plaquemines Parish in South Louisiana to do hurricane repair construction and serve children and women in poverty; to work with children in inner-city Atlanta with First Baptist, Salado; to serve at an orphanage in Haiti with Hope for the Hungry; to further hurricane recovery in New Orleans with First Baptist, New Orleans; to Vidor, TX, to continue recovery efforts in Vidor, TX; and to serve in Cuidad, Victoria, Mexico, with Normangee Baptist Church. We also have a class from the School of Business investing their spring break in Ecuador.
