Members of the UMHB Opera Program will show a different side of their musical personality when they take the stage with the UMHB Jazz Ensemble to perform a variety of popular jazz selections. The concert will include performances of: Embraceable You, Love is Here to Stay, Stormy Weather, Beyond the Sea, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Lullaby of Broadway, Summertime, Come Fly With Me, Orange Colored Sky, Cry Me a River, and Jumpin' East of Java. Throughout the evening, several instrumentalists and vocalists will be featured as soloists; including: Kelly Criswell, Leslie Cross, Raegan Cushman, Brianna Edwards, Rob Knoke, Alonzo Moreno, Zachary Raygoza, and Kathleen Shelton. Other UMHB Jazz Band and Opera students include Julie Atwood, Jonathan Bautista, Jerome Bayer, Bridgette Blanchard, Tatum Boultinghouse, Lizzie Campbell, Melissa Colquitt, Phillip Diaz, Gianna Flores, Kathryn Groseclose, Jeff Hill, Danielle Hooks, Hannah Horton, Matthew Hulon, Latisha Jefferies, Justin Nava, Jonathan Pedersen, Jeanette Peterson, Luis Tolentino, and Roscelee Torres.
Featured pianist, Nelda Milligan, graduated with honors from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and has performed with various symphony orchestras, jazz bands, and musical theaters in the South and Northwest. She has also been the staff accompanist at Cameron University (OK) and the house pianist for the Tacoma Musical Playhouse (WA). Nelda currently serves UMHB as the accompanist for the Opera program, Opera Cru, the Concert Choir and individual students. Mrs. Milligan is the Music Minister/pianist at Pershing Park Baptist Church in Killeen and is also the Music Director of The Salado Spur. She will be performing a variety of Ragtime solo selections as part of this special performance. In addition to her solo appearances, the UMHB Jazz Ensemble is honored to have Mrs. Milligan join them as an ensemble member for a few numbers.
The concert will be led by Nils Landsberg, Director of Athletic Bands, and George Hogan, Director of Opera Activities.
