Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dug itself a deep early hole and the Cru could not recover in a 20-4 loss to Southwestern University Wednesday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops UMHB to 11-3 on the season. The Pirates even their record at 7-7 with the victory.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then broke the game open with six-run innings in both the second and third. Todd Boone's two-run double and Blake Williams' three-run homer were the big hits in the second. Jamie Herrmann added a two-run homer in the third and Richard Falcone ripped a grand slam to make it 13-0 Pirates. UMHB got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth on R.B. Garza's three-run homer. Earnest Pena added a solo homer in the fifth to cut it to 13-4, but that's as close as the Cru would get. The Pirates added two runs in the seventh and five more in the ninth for the final margin.

Brian Tatum took the loss after giving up six runs in an inning and a third. Wes Willis earned the win to raise his record to 3-1 on the year. Willis struck out 10 and scattered seven hits in eight innings of work. Pena and Adam Froeschl had two hits apiece for the Cru. Falcone, Williams and Herrmann all had three hits apiece for the Pirates.

UMHB will now continue its home stand with the start of American Southwest Conference West Division play this weekend. The Cru will host Sul Ross State for a three-game series at Red Murff Field. The two teams will play a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the series with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
