BB sweeps doubleheader from Sul Ross State

Belton, TX- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball used a dominating pitching performance to take game one and an offensive explosion to power a game two victory as the Cru swept a doubleheader from Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the two wins. Sul Ross State drops to 3-13 overall and 0-2 in the ASC West with the two losses.

The Cru used R.B. Garza's dominant pitching to take a 1-0 decision in game one. The game's only run scored in the bottom of the fifth. Brady Honeycutt was hit by a pitch with one out. After a strikeout, Marcus Volz doubled and Honeycutt came around to score on a throwing error. Garza scattered three hits and struck out five in a complete-game shutout. He walked just one batter and only faced two batters over the minimum to raise his record to 3-1 on the year. Jaime Rojo allowed just five hits for the Lobos, striking out two and walking one. The only run he allowed was unearned. Volz had two of the Cru's five hits in the game.

UMHB then closed out the doubleheader with a 10-1 game two win. The Cru grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Volz led off with a home run, Joseph Villegas tripled and scored on a groundout and Steven Reinlie added a solo homer. Earnest Pena added a solo homer in the bottom of the second to make it 4-0. UMHB added a single run in the bottom of the third before Sul Ross scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning. UMHB would add two more in the fourth before Andrew White tripled home a run and scored on a groundout to make it 9-1 Cru in the bottom of the seventh and the Cru added a final run in the bottom of the eighth. Jared Hopper pitched eight innings of five-hit ball to get his first collegiate win for the Cru. Hopper struck out three and walked just one. Cody Kemmerling took the loss for Sul Ross. Volz and Reinlie had four hits apiece to lead the UMHB offense. Andrew White added three hits and Adam Froeschl and Joseph Villegas had two hits each. Eric Castillo and Isaiah Ramos had two hits apiece for the Lobos.

The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM single game at Red Murff Field tomorrow.
