BB routs Schreiner University 28-18

Kerrville, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team pounded out 26 hits and answered every Schreiner University comeback attempt as the Cru rolled to a 28-18 victory over the Mountaineers Friday afternoon in Kerrville. UMHB, ranked 19th in the nation, improves to 22-6 overall and 10-3 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops Schreiner to 8-22 overall and 5-8 in the ASC on the season.
The Cru scored three runs in the top of the first inning and built a 10-4 lead after the third inning. UMHB led by three or more runs the rest of the way and put the game out of reach with an eight-run ninth inning.
Joseph Villegas went 6-8 for UMHB with six RBI and he hit for the cycle in the victory. Villegas had a single, three doubles, a triple and a home run and set a new UMHB single-season record with his sixth triple of the year. The triple is the ninth of Villegas' career and he also ties the UMHB career record for triples. Marcus Volz was 5-8 with seven RBI and a home run and Steven Reinlie and Brady Honeycutt also hit homers for the Cru. Les Sarles and Andrew White added four hits apiece for UMHB and Earnest Pena was 3-5 with three RBI. R.B. Garza struck out 11 batters through five innings to pick up the win and raise his record to 5-1 on the year for UMHB.
The two teams will close out the series with a noon doubleheader tomorrow in Kerrville. UMHB will then hit the road to take on Trinity University in a 4:00 PM doubleheader next Tuesday in San Antonio.
