BB splits with Schreiner

04/05/08

Kerrville, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rode a big seventh-inning to a game one victory, but the Cru ran out of late inning magic in a game two loss as UMHB split a doubleheader with Schreiner University Saturday afternoon in Kerrville. UMHB posted a 14-8 game one victory before falling 10-2 in game two. The Cru is now 23-7 overall and 11-4 in American Southwest Conference play following the split. Schreiner moves to 9-23 overall and 6-9 in the ASC after the split.

UMHB used a six-run seventh-inning to take control of game one on the way to a 14-8 victory. Schreiner led into the fifth before the Cru scored five runs to take the lead. The Mountaineers answered with a four-run bottom of the fifth to make it 8-7, but UMHB tied the game in the top of the sixth. It would stay 8-8 into the top of the seventh before the Cru broke through for six runs, highlighted by Andrew White's two-run homer. Marcus Volz was 3-4 for UMHB and White, Joseph Villegas, Adam Froeschl, Steven Reinlie, R.B. Garza, Chris Joshlin and Earnest Pena all had two hits apiece for the Cru. One of Villegas' hits was a triple to give him 10 career triples to break the UMHB career record in that category. Adrian Montoya picked up the win for the Cru to improve to 2-1 on the year. Montoya pitched two and two-thirds innings of three-hit relief.

The Cru could not overcome Schreiner's seven-run fourth inning in a 10-2 game two loss. UMHB would trail 9-0 before scoring single runs in the eighth and ninth inning as the Cru could not get the offense going. Froeschl was the only player with more than one hit for UMHB as he went 2-4 in the game. Jared Hopper took the loss for the Cru to fall to 2-2 on the season.

UMHB will return to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Trinity University Tuesday in San Antonio. The Cru will then return home to host Concordia Texas for a three-game series in the final home action of the regular season.
