BB sweeps Trinity University

San Antonio, TX- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used late-inning rallies in both games and the Cru posted a doubleheader sweep of Trinity University Tuesday night in San Antonio. UMHB won game one 5-3 and took game two 10-9 on Joseph Villegas' three-run, ninth-inning homer. The Cru improves to 25-7 on the season with the two victories. Trinity drops to 24-10 on the year with the two losses.
The Cru rallied from 6-0, 7-3 and 9-7 deficits to win game two 10-9 on Villegas' dramatic ninth-inning blast. UMHB fell behind 7-3 entering the eighth inning before tying the game with four runs. Adam Froeschl hit a two-run homer and Villegas added a solo shot to cut it to 7-6 before the Cru tied the game a couple of batters later. Trinity added a pair in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead before Villegas sent a 2-2 pitch over the leftfield wall for what proved to be the game-winner in the top of the ninth. Steven Reinlie snared a line-drive and turned it into a game-ending double-play to close out the bottom of the ninth. David Keil pitched the final four innings for the Cru to earn his first collegiate victory.
UMHB scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings and watching an early lead slip away on the way to a 5-3 win in game one. Joseph Villegas singled home a run in the top of the first to make it 1-0 Cru. Trinity tied the game in the bottom of the second. UMHB then took a 3-1 lead when Brady Honeycutt singled home a run and scored on Earnest Pena's RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Trinity used an RBI single from Jeff Claydon and Jordan Pennington's RBI double to tie the game at three in the bottom of the fifth. R.B. Garza's RBI single gave UMHB a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth and Steven Reinlie added an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. Corey Dobbins earned the win for UMHB to raise his record to 4-0 and Les Sarles closed it out to earn his second save of the year. Evan Bronson took the loss for Trinity to fall to 5-3 on the year. Jonathan Whitehead had two of the Cru's nine hits. Claydon, Kevin Jackson and Dillan Early had two hits apiece for the Tigers in the loss.
The Cru will now return home to host Concordia Texas for a three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series this weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing things out with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. That series will be the final regular season home action for UMHB.
