BB falls to MC in ASC Tournament Game

Clinton, MS- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome a four-run eighth-inning for Mississippi College as the Cru dropped a 7-3 decision in game one of an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament First Round series Friday in Clinton, Mississippi. The loss drops UMHB to 28-11 overall on the season. The Choctaws improve to 23-17 on the year with the victory.

The Cru grabbed a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles from Joseph Villegas and Steven Reinlie in the first inning. The Choctaws tied the game at one on Brannon Walls solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. Marcus Volz tripled and scored on a wild pitch to put UMHB up 2-1 in the third. The Cru threatened the stretch the lead, but Walls threw out Adam Froeschl at home plate in that same inning. A fielding error allowed the Choctaws to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth. It would stay that way until Andrew White singled home the tying run in the top of the eighth. Walls threw out Joseph Villegas trying to score on the single to end the inning and preserve the 3-3 tie. The Choctaws then erupted for four eighth-inning runs to take control of the game. Cody Gullick drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run and Reed Prewitt added a three-run double to make it 7-3 MC. Josh Denson then shut down the Cru in order in the top of the ninth to clinch the win.

R.B. Garza took the loss for UMHB to fall to 6-3 on the year. Garza struck out 10 and walked five while scattering six hits in seven and a third innings of work. Nathan Stewart scattered seven hits and struck out nine for the Choctaws to raise his record to 2-3 on the year. Volz and Reinlie had two hits apiece for UMHB. Paige Hodges had two hits for the Choctaws.

The series will continue with a 1:00 PM game tomorrow afternoon in Clinton, If UMHB wins that game, the two teams will play a deciding game 30 minutes following the completion of the 1:00 PM game. You can listen to streaming audio of that game on the UMHB web site.
