MG advances to NCAA Division III National Championships

05/12/08

Braselton, GA - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's golf team is less than 24 hours away from teeing it up in the NCAA Division III National Championships for the first time in school history. The Cru is one of 35 teams selected to play in this year's national tournament, to be held at Chateau Elan Golf Course in Braselton, Georgia. UMHB won the American Southwest Conference Tournament to claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The four-day, 72-hole event will be played on two courses at Chateau Elan. Teams will play 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday before the field is cut to the top 23 teams. The remaining 23 teams will then play 18 more holes on both Thursday and Friday to close out the event.

The UMHB five-man team is made up of Casey Wharton (Sr., Groesbeck), Ryan Eastman (Sr., San Angelo), Davis Dewald (Jr., Copperas Cove), Garrison Nordt (So., Hewitt) and Eric White (So., Georgetown). White won the individual medalist honors at the ASC Tournament and Eastman and Dewald joined him on the ASC All-Conference First Team. Wharton was a Second Team ASC All-Conference selection. Cru head coach Randy Mann also took ASC Coach of the Year honors. The NCAA Tournament will be Mann's final tournament as head coach of the UMHB men's golf program. He begins new duties as UMHB's first full-time Associate Director of Athletics in June.

The Cru men will begin teeing off at 8:00 AM Central Time on Tuesday. UMHB will play the Woodlands Course on the first day before switching to the Chateau Course for the tournament's second day. The Cru will begin teeing off at 6:30 AM Central Time for Wednesday's second round. You can follow the tournament each day at www.golfstat.com.
