TEN closes out play at ITA Southwest Regional

Abilene, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's and women's tennis teams brought home a pair of championships from the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament in Abilene on Saturday. The Lady Cru won flight B women's singles and the UMHB men picked up a win in the men's Flight B singles consolation round.

Katy Butler won the Women's Flight B singles championship with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over U.T.-Tyler's Blair Wilson in the title match. Butler opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Howard Payne's Amy Bretzke and advanced to the championship match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over McMurry's Jeri Crawford. UMHB's Emily Williams opened with a 6-2, 7-5 win over McMurry's Rachel Smith before falling to Wilson 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

In men's flight A singles, UMHB's Alex Graham opened with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to U.T.-Tyler's Stephen Campbell. The Cru's Colby Nichols opened with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Brent Abilez of McMurry. Eric Thompson dropped his opening match to Shaun Maddox of U.T.-Tyler by a 6-1, 6-2 margin and Mitch Hallum opened with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Hardin-Simmons' Ramon Aguirre.

In men's flight A consolation, Graham opened with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win over Southwestern's Charles Prince before falling to Paul Haney of LeTourneau 6-1, 6-0. Nichols fell to U.T.-Tyler's Brad Fenter 6-3, 6-3 and Thompson dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Trinity's Eric Trakhtenbroit. Hallum fell to TLU's Travis Conn 6-2, 6-2.

In women's flight A singles, UMHB's Christi Voss opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Howard Payne's Keeley Brown and then topped U.T.-Tyler's Lainie Arellano 6-3, 6-0 in the second round. Voss then fell to Trinity's Cayleigh Simpson 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Simpson is the #4 seed and won this tournament last year. Heather Maust opened with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Southwestern Michelle Martinez before falling to Mary Pennington of Southwestern 6-0, 6-1. Whitney Wolz won her opening match 6-2, 6-0 over Sally Green of McMurry before falling to Megan Jackson of Trinity 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Amber Long fell to Michelle Hagler of U.T.-Tyler 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and Elise Kunze dropped a 6-2, 6-3 opening round decision to Lauren Giovannini of U.T.-Tyler.

In women's flight A consolation, Kunze opened with a win over Southwestern's Emily Gutzmer and then beat Savannah Matlock of U.T.-Dallas 6-0, 7-6 (10). Kunze fell to Amy Torti of McMurry 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Long fell to Lali Satyavada of Southwestern 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.

In men's flight A doubles, UMHB's Graham and Thompson fell to Trey Chavez and Todd Henington of Hardin-Simmons 8-3 in the first round. Nichols and Rudolph dropped an 8-3 decision to Trinity's James Furr and David Tran. Burton Goen and Thompson lost to Trinity's Crisanto Ramirez and Andrew Hoing 8-2.

In women's flight A doubles, UMHB's Kunze and Voss fell to #1 seed Alicia Hunt and Laura Steinmetz of Trinity 8-3 in the first round. Long and Wolz dropped a 9-7 decision to Trinity's Megan Jackson and Jen Taylor.

In men's flight B singles, Goen opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Schreiner University's Adam Dobbins before falling to #1 seed Andrew Hoing of Trinity 6-3, 6-0. Daniel White opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over R.J. Baker of McMurry before falling to Howard Payne's Jeff Troyne 6-2, 6-2. Rudolph fell to U.T.-Tyler's Nick Kreines 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round.

In men's flight B consolation, Rudolph opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nick Dickerson of Hardin-Simmons and he then topped McMurry's R.J. Baker 6-1, 6-0. Rudolph then won the consolation title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over TLU's Michael Packard.

The tournament closes out the fall season for the UMHB men and women.
