WBB beats Sul Ross Sate 64-51

Alpine, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used a solid defensive effort and clutch second-half shooting to post a 64-51 victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in Alpine. The UMHB women improve to 14-9 overall and 12-7 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Lady Lobos to 6-16 overall and 5-14 in ASC play on the year.
UMHB opened the game with a 23-8 run before the Lady Lobos fought back to cut it to 27-25 at halftime. The Cru women scored the first four points of the second half but Sul Ross once again battled back and tied the game at 33 with 17:11 left to play. UMHB then used a 13-1 run to take a 12-point lead and the Cru women would stretch it out to as many as 18 points before coasting to the win.
UMHB held Sul Ross State to 23 per cent shooting from the field and the Lady Lobos hit just 1-18 from three-point range. The Cru women shot 46 per cent from the field in the second half and finished at 40 per cent for the game. UMHB also out rebounded SRSU 47-40 in the victory.
Landie Thompson led the Cru women with 20 points and she also grabbed seven rebounds. Kallie White added 12 points and seven boards for UMHB. Nitra Woods topped Sul Ross State with 22 points and 12 rebounds, but no other player had more than seven points for the Lady Lobos.
The UMHB women now close out the regular season with a pair of home games next week. The Cru women will open the week with a 5:30 PM tip-off against Hardin-Simmons on Thursday before closing out the regular season with a 1:00 PM start against McMurry University on Saturday. Both of those games will be played at the Mayborn Campus Center on the UMHB campus. The Cru women will enter the final week of the season tied with Concordia Texas for fourth place in the ASC West Division. UMHB holds the tiebreaker with Concordia and just needs to match the Tornados results in the final week to clinch a third straight berth in the ASC Championship Tournament.
