WS advances to ASC Championship Tournament

Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's soccer team has qualified for the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament for just the second time in the program's history and the Lady Cru will open play in the conference tournament on Friday afternoon in Abilene. The UMHB women finished the regular season with an 8-9-0 overall record and an 8-5-0 mark in ASC play to qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since the 2001 season. The UMHB women fell to Austin College 5-1 in a semifinal match that year.

The UMHB women are the #6 seed in the tournament and will take on #3 seed U.T.-Tyler (11-3-3, 9-1-3 ASC) in a 2:00 PM first-round match on Friday. The winner of that match will move on to face U.T.-Dallas (12-4-3, 11-1-1 ASC) in a 2:00 PM semifinal on Saturday. UMHB fell to U.T.-Tyler 2-0 in the regular season match between the two teams as the Lady Patriots scored two goals in the first five minutes of the match. In the other first round match, Mississippi College (12-5-0, 10-3-0 ASC) will take on Texas Lutheran University (11-6-1, 9-3-1 ASC) at 11:00 AM on Friday. The winner of that match will then advance to face tournament host Hardin-Simmons University (17-1-0, 13-0-0 ASC) in an 11:00 AM semifinal on Saturday. The ASC Tournament Championship match will be played at 1:00 PM on Sunday and the tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. All of the ASC Tournament matches will be played on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

The UMHB women are under the direction of head coach Meghann Brown. The Lady Cru is 0-5 against the rest of the ASC Tournament field this season. Forward Mickie Arredondo (So., Bryan) is the team's leading scorer with seven goals, one assist and 15 total points. MF Lauren Thorne (Jr., Round Rock) is right behind her with four goals, four assists and 12 total points. Seven different players have five or more points for the Lady Cru and six different players have scored game-winning goals. GK Ally Sargeant (So., Bryan) had four shutouts and a 1.76 goals against average on the season and she has played all but 16 minutes of the year in goal for the UMHB women.
