TEN opens play at UMHB Fall Classic

Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's and women's tennis teams opened strong on the first day of the UMHB/Temple College Fall Classic Friday afternoon in Belton.

In flight one men's singles, UMHB's Eric Thompson opened with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Southwestern's Alex Jansen. Thompson then topped Schreiner's Carlo Sasam 6-3, 0-6, 10-5 to advance to tomorrow's championship match against Kevin Serwatka of Temple College. UMHB's Chad Mann opened with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4 win over D'Artagnan Bebel of Southwestern before falling to Serwatka 6-2, 6-1. Mann will face Sasam in the third place match tomorrow.

In flight two men's singles, UMHB's Burton Goen fell to Schreiner's Ben Jackson 6-3, 6-2 in the first round before beating Southwestern's Cameron Holland 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation round. He will face Riley Winterringer of Schreiner tomorrow. UMHB's Colby Nichols opened with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Michael Adundis of Temple College before losing to Winterringer 6-1, 6-2. Nichols will take on Holland tomorrow.

In flight three men's singles, UMHB's Mitch Hallum opened with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win over Daniel Okland of Schreiner. Hallum then fell to Michael Smathers of Temple College 6-3, 8-0. Hallum till take on TC's Eric Tobin in the third place match tomorrow. UMHB's Alex Graham fell to Tobin 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 in the first round and then beat Schreiner's Adam Dobbins 6-4, 6-2. He will face Okland tomorrow.

In flight one women's singles, UMHB's Whitney Wolz opened with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Southwestern's Leslie Smith before posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Schreiner's Michelle Martinez. Amber Thomas fell to TC's Sarah Cornejo 3-6, 6-2, 10-2 before topping Schreiner's Katrina Priess 6-4, 6-2. Thomas and Wolz will face each other tomorrow.

In flight two women's singles, the Lady Cru sends two players to tomorrow's championship match. Christi Voss opened with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Temple College's Stacy Bell before knocking off Lali Satyavanda of Southwestern 5-7, 6-1, 12-10. Emily Kunze of UMHB opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Southwestern's Allison Noblitt and then beat Stephanie Reed of Schreiner 7-5, 6-4. Kunze and Voss will meet in the championship match. UMHB's Katy Butler opened with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Satyavanda and then fell to Bell 7-6 (4), 2-6, 10-7.

In flight three singles, UMHB's Heather Maust opened with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Brittany Fondren of Southwestern. Maust then beat Sarah Fitzsimmons of Southwestern 7-6 (3), 6-1 to advance to tomorrow's championship match against Charlotte Haskey of Southwestern. UMHB's Amber Long opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Southwestern's Alexandra Nicole before falling to Haskey 7-5, 5-7, 10-6.

In flight four women's singles, UMHB's Emily Williams posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Southwestern's Katie Cam. She will play Schreiner's Tina Phillipi tomorrow.

In flight one men's doubles, Goen and Thompson opened with an 8-5 victory over Schreiner's Sasam and Jackson while the team of Graham and Daniel White fell to Serwatka and Berg of TC 8-6 in the first round. Matt Rudolph and Nichols fell to Schreiner's Coleman and Winterringer 8-5.

In flight two men's doubles, Mann and Hallum lost to Smather and Tobin of TC 8-3 in the first round.

In flight one women's doubles, UMHB's Long and Wolz opened with an 8-5 victory over Satyavanda and Fitzsimmons of Southwestern University. UMHB's Thomas and Maust fell to Priess and Martinez of Schreiner 8-3.

In flight two women's doubles, UMHB's Kunze and Voss opened with an 8-5 win over Foster and Turner of TC. Butler and Williams lost to Southwestern's Noblitt and Huskey 8-2.

The tournament closes out tomorrow morning. The UMHB men and women will return to action with a trip to Abilene for the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament on September 27-30.
