TEN competes in UMHB Spring Classic

Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's and women's tennis teams played their first home action of the spring with the UMHB Spring Classic over the weekend. The Cru and Lady Cru faced off with players from Temple College and Eastfield College in the tournament.
In flight one women's singles, UMHB's Rebecca Everett opened with a 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 loss to TC's Stacy Bell. Everett then topped Eastfield's Racheal Schomer 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 and topped UMHB teammate Amber Long 6-3, 6-1 in the fifth place match. Long opened with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Eastfield's Safia Molina before beating UMHB's Christi Voss 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Voss opened with a 75-, 6-7(5), 10-8 loss to TC's Anna Lobnitz before falling to Long. Voss closed out the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Schomer.
In flight two women's singles, UMHB's Whitney Wolz won the championship with a 6-4, 6-3 win over teammate Elise Kunze. Wolz opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Eastfield's Lidia Candia before beating teammate Heather Maust 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 to advance to the title match. Kunze opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Eastfield's Cynthia Ruiz before beating TC's Denice Turner 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. Maust opened with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over TC's Tori Martinez before falling to Wolz. She then topped Turner 6-4, 6-1 in the third place match to give the Cru women the top three finishers in the bracket.
In flight three round-robin play in women's singles, UMHB's Kallie White went 2-1. White opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Eastfield's Maritza Lopez and then beat Eastfield's Nancy Gonzalez. White's only loss came in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of TC's Evelyn Escobedo.
In women's doubles, UMHB's Everett and Kunze topped TC's Bell and Escobedo 8-6, beat Molina and Schomer of Eastfield 8-2 and topped Candia and Ruiz of Eastfield 8-0. Voss and Long beat Bell and Escobedo 8-3, topped Candia and Ruiz 8-0 and beat TC's Lobnitz and Martinez 9-7.Wolz and Maust beat Eastfield's Gonzalez and Lopez 8-0, topped TC's Foster and Turner 8-4 and then beat teammates Jenna Pergande and Kallie White 8-3. Pergande and White beat TC's Foster and Turner 8-0 and then beat Gonzalez and Lopez 8-0.
In flight one men's singles, UMHB's Colby Nichols opened with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to TC's Kevin Serwatka before beating Cru teammate Eric Williams 6-4, 6-2. Nichols then dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to TC's Mitch Abundis. Williams opened with a 7-6(2), 6-2 loss to Eastfield's Nick Beard. He lost his final match 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-5 to UMHB teammate Chad Mann. Mann opened with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-2 loss to TC's Justin Berg and then fell to Abundis 6-2, 6-4.
In flight two and three singles, UMHB's Alex Graham opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Eastfield's Caleb Prewitt. He then lost to TC's Eric Tobin 6-2, 6-3 and fell to Eastfield's Alexis Naverez 6-4, 6-3. UMHB's Daniel White topped Tobin 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, beat Eastfield's Anthony Delgado 6-2, 6-2 and won by default over Eastfield's James Foster. Mitch Hallum also topped Foster by default before falling to Delgado 6-4, 6-3 and to TC's Michael Smathers 6-0, 6-0.
In flight one men's doubles, Nichols and Williams opened with an 8-1 win over Naverez and Prewitt of Eastfield before falling to TC's Serwatka and Abundis 8-3. The duo closed out the day with an 8-2 loss to Beard and Gonzalez of Eastfield. Mann and Graham lost to Serwatka and Abundis 8-1, dropped an 8-0 decision to TC's Berg and Williams and fell to Naverez and Prewitt 8-6. Hallum and White paired for the Cru to beat Eastfield's Delgado and Foster 8-6 before losing to TC's Tobin and Smathers 8-4.
