SB sweeps doubleheader from Howard Payne

Brownwood, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team scored the go-ahead runs in its final at-bat in both games as the Cru posted a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University Thursday afternoon in Brownwood. UMHB won game one 6-3 in eight innings and took game two 3-1. The Cru improves to 13-5 overall and 6-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the sweep. Howard Payne falls to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the ASC with the two losses.
The Cru used a three-run eighth inning to take control of the game on the way to a 6-3 win in game one. UMHB fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning before tying the game on Charlsie Cope's RBI single in the top of the fifth. Kelsey Greeson and Jessica Oliver added RBI singles in the sixth inning to put UMHB up 3-1. HPU then tied the game with Lauren Bollich's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Karen Fertitta gave UMHB a 5-3 lead with a two-run double and Cope added an RBI single to make it 6-3 in the eighth. Kelsey Greeson went the distance for UMHB to improve to 6-1 on the season. She scattered six hits and struck out seven. Cope and Kacie Kripner had two hits apiece for the Cru in the victory.
UMHB then used a two-run seventh inning to take a 3-1 victory in game two. Jessica Oliver's RBI single gave the Cru a 1-0 first inning lead before HPU tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Kripner and Megan Bohne then hit RBI singles in the top of the seventh to put the Cru up 3-1. Daphne Kahlig threw a complete-game, eight-hitter, She gave up just an unearned run and pushed her record to 5-2. Bohne had three hits for UMHB and Kripner added two hits for the Cru.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Brownwood. UMHB will then have two weeks off before returning to action with a four-game home series against Schreiner University on April 4-5.
