BB edges Texas Lutheran 3-2

03/28/08

Belton, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used some timely hitting and an outstanding pitching performance from R.B. Garza to post a 3-2 victory over Texas Lutheran University Friday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improves to 20-5 overall and 8-2 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 14-14 overall and 4-6 in the ASC on the season.

TLU took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Nokelby's RBI single in the top of the first inning. UMHB answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Adam Froeschl singled home the first run for the Cru and Steven Reinlie added an RBI groundout to put UMHB up 2-1. Drew Farr tied the game with a solo home run for the Bulldogs in the top of the second. It would stay that way until Jonathan Whitehead was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to force in what proved to be the game-winning run. Garza took over from there, shutting down the Bulldogs and pitching his way out of a couple of late-inning jams. Garza struck out 11 and walked just one while scattering 10 hits to improve to 4-1 on the year. Logan Hull took the loss for TLU to drop to 4-4 after giving up six hits in seven innings.

Froeschl and Andrew White had two hits apiece for UMHB. Andrew Femath, Nokleby and Farr all had two hits apiece to lead the Bulldogs offense.

The two teams will close out the series with a 12:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow at Red Murff Field. UMHB will then hit the road for a 3:00 PM single-game in a make-up date at Texas Wesleyan University Monday in Fort Worth.
