05/02/08

Irving, TX -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team could not overcome an early deficit and the Cru dropped a 7-1 decision to Louisiana College in a winner's bracket game in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Friday in Irving. The loss drops the Cru to 32-8 on the season. Louisiana COllege improves to 38-4 on the year with the victory.

LC scored three unearned runs in the top of the third inning and UMHB could not recover. The Wildcats added a run in the top of the third before UMHB cut the lead to 4-1 on Katina Penter's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Erica Harwell then blasted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Daphne Kahlig took the loss for the Cru to drop to 12-4 on the season. Kahlig scattered seven hits and allowed just three earned runs in four and a third innings. McCaslin Carson threw a complete-game, five-hitter to get the win for LC and raise her record to 17-2 on the year.

UMHB will now face the Howard Payne/U.T.-Tyler winner in an elimination game at 11:00 AM tomorrow. Louisiana College moves into the championship game at 2:00 PM. The winner of the 11:00 AM game would have to beat LC twice to win the ASC title. The ASC Tournament Champion claims the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Championships.
