The University of Mary Hardin Baylor

SB sweeps HSU again and goes unbeaten in ASC West Division play

04/26/08

Abilene, TX- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dominated both games and the Cru made history in the process as UMHB swept a doubleheader from Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Abilene. The Cru won game one 17-1 and then posted a 3-0 victory in game two. UMHB improves to 31-5 overall and finishes 24-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. The Cru has won 24 straight games and becomes the first team in ASC history to go 24-0 in divisional play. The two losses drop Hardin-Simmons to 16-18 overall and 10-14 in the ASC West Division.

The Cru blew open game one with a five-run third inning and then used a nine-run sixth inning to end it in a 17-1 victory. Megan Bohne's three-run double was the biggest hit in the third and the Cru added two more runs on an error. Bohne added a two-run single in the fourth to make it a 7-0 lead. Erica Salazar added an RBI triple in the fifth. HSU scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth before the Cru erupted for nine runs in the sixth. Bohne added another two-run single in the sixth. Bohne finished the game 4-5 with seven RBI for the Cru and Salazar added two hits for UMHB. Kelsey Greeson scattered three hits in four scoreless innings for the Cru. Greeson struck out seven and did not walk a batter in raising her record to 15-1. Greeson now needs just one more victory to match the UMHB single-season record of 16 set by current Cru head coach Kasey Blomquist.

The Cru then used timely hitting a dominating pitching performance from Daphne Kahlig to post a 3-0 game two victory. Kacie Kripner's RBI double made it 1-0 UMHB in the top of the third inning. Kripner added another RBI double in the fifth to stretch the lead to 2-0. Greeson added an RBI single in the top of the seventh to provide an insurance run for the Cru. Kahlig went the distance for a three-hit shutout to improve to 12-2 on the year. She struck out eight and walked three in the win. Kripner had three hits for the Cru and Becca Ribera and Charlsie Cope added two hits apiece for UMHB.

The Cru will close out the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Houston-Victoria on Tuesday. UMHB will then be the West Division's #1 seed in next weekend's ASC Championship Tournament. The Cru will get a first round bye and will open the tournament against the winner of the U.T.-Tyler/Howard Payne first round matchup at 11:00 AM on Friday.
