Belton, Texas - Ninety students received recognition during an Awards ceremony at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on April 11. Each student was awarded either a medal based on effort, academics, or character; an award in an area such as scholastic achievement, service in some area of university life, or special talent; or a monetary scholarship to use in coming semesters to help meet school expenses.Ana Clonts of Temple and Katy Seals of Temple both received the Austin-Burke "Best of Show" Art Award for "Best of Show" in the spring and in the fall art shows.
Eric Peither of Temple received the Jewel Vickers Payne Memorial Medal for the student who makes the best drawings.
Chelsea Caspell of Allen received the Ola Joyce Springer Hander/Lucile Capt Endowed Scholarship. Established from the estate of Ola Joyce Springer Hander, MHB class of 1952, of Paris, Arkansas, the scholarship was created to assist and encourage students majoring in Biology and/or Biology-related fields.
Heather Gates of Rockwall received the Accounting Excellence Award, which is for an outstanding senior accounting major by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Janell Treece of Hearne received the Computer Graphics Design Award. Presented annually to a Computer Graphics Design senior in that has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity, and potential for becoming a distinguished leader in his/her profession, high academic performance and successful practical work performance are major considerations in recipient selection.
Josh Oropello of Temple received the Computer Information Systems Award. Presented annually to a Computer Information Systems senior that has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity, and potential for becoming a distinguished leader in his/her profession, high academic performance and successful practical work performance are major considerations in recipient selection.
Jon Wible of Waco received the Management Award. Presented annually to a senior majoring in Management that has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity, and potential for becoming a distinguished leader in his/her profession. High academic performance and successful practical work performance are major considerations in recipient selection.
Shaun Felechner of Belton received the Marketing Award. Presented annually to a senior majoring in Marketing that has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity, and potential for becoming a distinguished leader in his/her profession. High academic performance and successful practical work performance are major considerations in recipient selection.
Ashlee King of McGregor received the College of Business Dean's Award, which is presented annually to a senior Business major who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity, and potential for becoming a distinguished business leader.
Jessica Snow of Manor received the College of Business Faculty Award, which is presented annually to a senior majoring in Business who has best exemplified Christian ethical and moral standards, leadership, and scholarship.
Eric Bonstead of Belton received the Wall Street Journal Award, which is presented to a graduating senior majoring in Business who is considered the most outstanding in scholarship and character. This award includes a free subscription to the Wall Street Journal.
Frank Vitoria of Killeen received the Game Programming Award presented annually to a Computer Science senior majoring in Distributed Operating Systems that has demonstrated exceptional leadership, scholarship, integrity and potential for becoming a distinguished leader in his/her profession. Brent McKinney of Killeen received the American Institute of Chemists Student Award, which is presented to an outstanding senior Chemistry major having demonstrated leadership, character, high scholastic aptitude, and potential for advancement in his/her chosen profession.
Kristie LaGrone of Pflugerville received the Freshman Chemistry Award, which is presented to the student with the highest grade in General Chemistry. This award includes a copy of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics from Chemical Rubber Corporation Press.
Travis Brown of Austin, Daniel Green of Abilene, Jennifer Lapierre of Killeen and Stefanie Underwood of Forney received the Amy LeVesconte Presidential Endowed Scholarship, which was established by former students, graduates, family, and friends to honor the former professor and chair of the Chemistry Department of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The scholarship was created to assist and encourage students majoring in Chemistry and/or Chemistry-related fields.
Zayde Radwan of Pasadena and Craig Jenkins of Killeen received the Dr. Sally A. Provence Presidential Endowed Scholarship, which was established by the estate of Dr. Sally A. Provence, MHB class of 1937, from New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Provence, nationally known in the field of pediatrics, was a faculty member for more than 30 years at Yale University in the Department of Pediatrics and the Yale Child Study Center. This scholarship is to be awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Biology or Chemistry leading to a pre-med qualification.
Chelsea Caspell of Allen and Tori Webb of Houston both received the Outstanding Student in Biology Award. This award is presented each spring to the most outstanding senior majoring in Biology with either a Cell Biology or Organismal biology emphasis. The selection of the awardee is made by the Biology faculty based on scholarship, integrity, professionalism, and potential for success in the field of biology.
Darcy Perez of Fort Hood received the Mary Elizabeth Webster Edwards Endowed Scholarship, which was established by Mary Elizabeth Webster Edwards, MHB class of 1929. This scholarship is given to students majoring in Communication or to students certifying in English.
Samantha Anderson of Keller received the Orrick Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to worthy students majoring in Communication and/or Drama.
Jennifer Meers of Dallas received the Bluebonnet Medal, which was presented to the Editor of the Bluebonnet yearbook.
Kaylynn Bishop of Katy received the Baylorian Award for Managing Editor.
Sandra Rodriguez of Temple received the Baylorian Award for Literary Editor.
Andrew Smiley of Harker Heights received the Baylorian Award for Art Editor.
Andrew Smiley of Harker Heights and Elizabeth Melles of Austin received the W. F. Hutmacher Scholarly Writing Award. This award is given annually to the winner of Sigma Tau Delta's contest for literary scholarship in honor of Dr. W. F. Hutmacher, a faculty member in the UMHB English Department for 22 years.
Marleigh Clayton of Conroe received the Thelma Wright Jenkins Presidential Endowed Scholarship, which was established by Thelma Wright Jenkins of Waco, Texas. This scholarship was created to benefit students planning to become public school teachers.
Elizabeth Melles of Austin and Coretta Perkins of Killeen both received the Konrad and Clara Lux Endowed Scholarship, which was established by the trust of Clara Lux of Waco, Texas. This scholarship was created to benefit students planning to become public school teachers.
Noelle Renfro of Lorena received the Bernia Tyson Miles Scholarship, which is presented annually in honor of Mrs. Bernia Tyson Miles, a former professor of Education at Mary Hardin-Baylor and an alumna of the University.
Andrew Smiley of Harker Heights received the Allison-Owens Endowed Scholarship, given in memory of Roland Allison and Laverne Owens and in honor of Cara Lois Allison and Robert Owens by Riley and Carolyn Owens.
Elizabeth Melles of Austin received the Cole-Taylor-Townsend Scholarship.
Andrew Smiley of Harker Heights received the Vann English Scholarship.
Andrew Smiley of Harker Heights, Elizabeth Melles of Austin and Kaylynn Bishop of Katy all received the Evelyn McFatridge Brashears Award. This endowed award is given in honor of Mrs. Brashears by her brother. Mrs. Brashears was an English professor at UMHB.
Theresa Perez of Copperas Cove received the Troy McClure Tipton Endowed Scholarship. Established by Paul B. Tipton and Lucia M. Tipton in memory of their son, Troy McClure Tipton, this scholarship is to be awarded to any junior or senior student majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and desiring to coach on a secondary, college, or university level.
Stacy Alzona of Copperas Cove received the Emma DeLacye Dillon Presidential Endowed Scholarship.
Zane Johnston of Albany received the D'Anne Renee Burns Memorial Endowed Scholarship.
Kris Haney of Temple received the EXSS Major of the Year Award.
Aleyna Blackketter of McGregor, Colin Bloodworth of Victoria, Justin Burke of Harker Heights, Megan Horlander of Tyler, Kimberly Jones of Cleburne, Luke Longino of Lufkin, Marilynn Standridge of Temple and Tara Woodruff of Belton all received the Dr. Bertha Ann Reuter Scholarship. This endowed scholarship for any student of junior or senior standing who are majoring in History was established from funds given to UMHB by Dr. Bertha Ann Reuter, longtime chairperson of the History Department. The recipients were chosen on the basis of character, service, and scholarship.
Ashley Shafer of Baytown received the Delta Psi Theta Award, presented annually by Delta Psi Theta, UMHB Mathematics Society, to the student with the highest grade in Calculus I.
Daphne Kahlig of Lott received the Kappa Mu Epsilon Award, as the student with the best grade in Abstract Algebra.
Dani Beth Crosby of Cleburne received the Presser Foundation Award.
Carrie Brinegar of Waco, Karl Eason of Round Rock, Susie Moss-McUmber of Kempner, Eric Peither of Temple, Courtney Pett of Tomball, Eric Todd of Rowlett and Heather Wofford of Killeen all received the Lucile Lane Lacy Art Scholarship.
Elizabeth Arellano of Garland received the Jimmie Brown McKenzie Grant. This award is given from the endowment established by Mrs. McKenzie to assist deserving junior and senior Nursing majors in completing their degrees.
Davong Rattanasavanh of Temple received the Haley Ann Parker Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a deserving student majoring in nursing. It was established as a memorial to the infant daughter of Mark and Ann Parker and granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Bobby E. Parker.
Geoffrey Payne of Midlothian received the Dorothy Hughes Weatherby Presidential Endowed Scholarship. Given to ministerial students, this award was established by Roy Weatherby to honor Mrs. Weatherby, a graduate of UMHB, who taught school for over 25 years.
Katy Butler of Waco received the Pi Gamma Mu Award as a senior Social Science major who has demonstrated scholarship, leadership and service.
Justen Aguillion of Belton and Trevor Ligon of Belton received the Mamie Boone Endowed Scholarship, which was established by the estate of Mamie Boone of Dallas, Texas and Mrs. Mary Long of Belton, Texas. It is given annually to a deserving student based on need and merit.
Perla Martinez of Belton and Christina Knighton of Waco received the Mildred Carroll Wiseman Presidential Endowed Scholarship, which is a presidential endowed scholarship established through the estate of Dr. Mildred Carroll Wiseman of San Angelo, Texas. This scholarship is to be given to a student who is participating in a study abroad program.
Daniel Rowe of Lufkin received the Heather Ann Hurley Presidential Endowed Scholarship.
Matt Kelly of Fayetteville received the Zondervan-UMHB for Excellence in Biblical Hebrew Award. The biblical languages faculty makes this award to the student with the most hours in biblical Hebrew, who attains the highest grade point average in biblical Hebrew, and who participates in Eta Beta Rho (the National Scholastic Honor Society for Students of Hebrew Language and Culture).
Austin Fischer of Lufkin received the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Christian Studies.
Lisa Baker of Gatesville received the Goad-Leigh Scholarship.
Raychelle Presley of Highlands received the Michele Ann McClure Scholarship.

Brenda Alvarez of Waco, Cassandra Konichek of Harker Heights and Taylor Rogers of New Braunfels all received the Dorothy Hughes Weatherby Presidential Endowed Scholarship.
Maegan Eikenburg of Seguin received the Outstanding MBA Student Award.
Allison Hankins of Pflugerville; Andrea Mercer of Temple; Andy Pipes of Maypearl; Caleb McKeown of Tyler; Corbin Simmons of Lindale; Erika Mercer of Temple; Margaret Curry of Cibolo; Michelle Wallace of McGregor; Randy McSwain of Temple; and Tatenda Tavaziva of Belton all received the Townsend Memorial Scholarship, which is made possible by a trust left in the will of E. G. and Elli Moore Townsend. Dr. Townsend served the university from 1901 until 1947 in various positions as vice president, academic dean and head of the religion department. Mrs. Townsend, an 1879 graduate of Baylor College at Independence, was the founder of the Alumni Association. She established the Cottage Home System to provide a means for needy young ladies to work at jobs on campus to earn their room and board. Mrs. Townsend was a crusader for education for women when that idea was not popular and a leader in raising scholarship funds when education was considered a luxury for the well-to-do.
