Dr. Bawcom Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Bawcom Tech AwardBelton, Texas - Dr. Jerry G. Bawcom, President of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor was recently named a 2008 Distinguished Alumni of the College of Education at Texas Tech University.

Dr. Bawcom earned a B.S. in education in 1967 and a M.Ed. in secondary education in 1969 at Texas Tech.

Dr. Bawcom was honored for distinguished service in public education and private higher education. Dr. Bawcom taught and coached in public schools in Sundown and Lubbock, Texas, prior to joining Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, where he served for 22 years, the final seven as president.

Dr. Bawcom has led UMHB as its president for 17 years. He has served in leadership in numerous civic and service organizations, both in Tarrant and Bell counties, served in leadership in each church where he has held membership, and held leadership positions in a number of state higher education related organizations.

Dr. Bawcom's wife, Vicky, is also a 1967 graduate of Texas Tech. Also recognized with Dr. Bawcom was Steve Gatlin, middle brother of the Gatlin Brothers. Both Bawcom and Gatlin were reared in west Texas; and they both lived in Thompson Hall while at Texas Tech.
