The Crusader Update
Absence Makes the Grades Go Yonder
Dear Crusader Parent,
We are pleased to have your son or daughter as a freshman at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. We are making an increased effort to provide all freshmen with the best opportunity possible to succeed in college, and we need your help. We believe all of the students admitted to UMHB have the ability to succeed, but many do not perform up to their potential.
The first weeks of the freshman year are crucial to academic success. Lack of regular class attendance is the strongest early indicator of early potential problems. Research tells us there are two factors consistent with successful students: attending class and sitting up front. While these may seem obvious, some students will ignore these factors.
You can be of great assistance to your son/daughter regarding attendance. We are now in the early days of the term. This is the time that freshmen must develop the self-motivation and self-discipline necessary to succeed in college. Attending class is an essential part of this process. Talk to your student now about going to every class and seeking assistance promptly with any academic problems. Our faculty members are eager to help students when they are aware that students want help. Assistance is also available from our Center for Academic Excellence, located on the first floor of Hardy Hall.
Please help us do all we can to make sure your son or daughter has a successful experience at UMHB.
Sincerely,
Jerry G. Bawcom
President
