The Crusader Update

Spiritual Growth

Being "all there" while at UMHB includes connecting with the community and ministering locally. Agencies, churches, and individuals in central Texas are blessed by the energy, creativity, strength, and love they receive through the involvement of students in their lives.

And there are so many options for students! Here is a handful facilitated by our Baptist Student Ministry:

  • Children's Ministry: loving kids and sharing the Good News with them.
  • Community Service: various projects such as the recent hurricane relief work.
  • Disciple Now Weekends: for youth groups in and beyond this area.
  • Hope for the Hungry: taking groups to low-income areas for ministry.
  • Hospital Ministry: supplying volunteers at local hospitals.
  • J.A.I.L. and Juvenile Probation: providing positive relationships and role models for men, women, and youth in trouble.
And that is only the beginning! There are new opportunities almost weekly. UMHB also has Reaching Out, a one-day event held each Saturday where students serve at local agencies in the community. They may mow grass, paint buildings, trim trees, stuff envelopes, paint the fingernails of an elderly woman, or distribute food to needy families. Students also have opportunities to get involved in local churches by teaching Bible Study classes and leading music and worship services. Getting involved in a local Body of believers is essential to growing as a college student.

Serving others is an enriching experience for both those who give it and receive it. Such as my friend Felicia. Although she didn't know it when she came to UMHB, Felicia was a natural leader. She became involved with Hope for the Hungry and started going once a week to play with, teach, ad love the children in a housing project. By here sophomore year, she was on the Ministry Leadership Council of Baptist Student Ministry, helping other students connect with these young lives. Last summer, she was in Haiti with two other UMHB students, teaching various skills to boys in an orphanage sponsored by Hope for the Hungry. If someone had told her the first few weeks of her freshman year that she would soon be living, laughing, learning, and loving in Haiti, she would likely have been surprised.

That is one story of scores that could be told. As your son or daughter continues at UMHB, I hope you will encourage him/her to be among those who are "all here." Jim Elliot also said, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

Go Cru!
