The UMHB CAATE accredited ATEP is designed to combine the best of classroom and clinical education components in a practical, hands on setting under the direct supervision of certified and licensed athletic trainers, physicians, nurses, and emergency care personnel. We focus on individual attention from faculty members and clinical instructors allowing the student to progress in athletic training skills in a practical athletic training setting. This occurs in the classroom, the ATEP lab, and the athletic training rooms. Clinical rotations include college, high school, surgical, clinic, physician, professional, and emergency care settings. A student begins the program as a Pre-Professional and moves to Professional Phase I.
During the Pre-professional/Professional Phase I stage, the student completes pre-requisite courses and clinical rotations on campus with all sports and clinical instructors to gain an understanding of the field and the program requirements. Qualified students may be considered for off campus rotations depending on career goals. A Phase I student may apply for Professional Phase II April 15th.
Professional Phase II students spend three years in classrooms and clinical rotations on and off campus to learn and practice athletic training skills necessary to be successful in the field. Students also prepare to sit for the Texas Licensure Exam and the national Board of Certification exam for athletic training.
