The Bells, UMHB's student newspaper, won the Sweepstakes Award for Division 5 and first place in Overall Excellence.
In its division, The Bells won all the first place awards in sports writing and in page design. Staff members also won two of the three news writing first place awards.
The event included on-site contests, which were in various categories. Students participated in the competitions on the first day of the TIPA convention against all schools.
In the on-site competitions, UMHB students took home seven awards. Crystal Donahue of Jonestown placed first in feature writing, Ben Rhudy of Gatesville placed second for critical review, Janell Treece of Hearne placed third in editorial cartoon, Brittney Tice of Silsbee placed third in radio advertising, Jena Coulson of Florence placed third in print advertising, Chelsea Schilling of Temple placed honorable mention for headline writing and the staff placed second for best of show for a newspaper issue judged on site.
UMHB students also took home 24 previously published individual entry awards. First place winners included Chelsea Schilling for news story, Sara Barnes of Lorena for news feature story, Ben Rhudy for critical review, Jena Coulson for single subject presentation, Denise Marcos of Killeen for sports column, Nicholas Jones of Belton for sports news story, Denise Marcos for sports feature story, Rebecca Blizzard of Belton for feature photo, Jennifer Meers of Dallas for sports feature photo, Jessa Grassi of Arlington for page one design, Chelsea Schilling for op-ed page design, Jena Coulson for feature page design, and Sarah-Jane Sanders of Dawson for photo illustration.
Second place winners included Jessa Grassi for general column, Garrett Smith of Canyon for feature story, Rebecca Blizzard for news photo, Rebecca Blizzard and Jennifer Meers for newspaper picture story, Jena Coulson for information graphic and The Bells staff for special edition/section.
Third place winners included Chelsea Schilling for in-depth reporting and Denise Marcos for sports page design.
