Young attendees will receive helium filled balloons, "slime", and liquid nitrogen tasty treats (as long as they last).
The Sigma-Pi Chemistry Club of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, the Heart O'Texas Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the Chemistry Department of UMHB will sponsor this event to celebrate National Chemistry Week, October 18-24. National Chemistry Week recognizes the many contributions made by chemists to our modern society. The theme this year is: "The Elements: In honor of the 140th anniversary of Mendeleev's Periodic Table of the Elements."
In addition to the "Demos in the Dark," the Sigma-Pi Chemistry Club will distribute 200 booklets filled with hands-on science activities to elementary schools in the central Texas area. This year, thanks to a very generous donation made by the Merck Coorporation, copies of the Merck Index will be presented to all attending High School Chemistry Teachers during the Demos in the Dark. Teachers can call (254) 295-4537 to get more information about the presentation.
National Chemistry Week is an outreach program of the American Chemical Society and is aimed at enhancing the public's awareness of the contributions of chemistry in everyday lives and in the nation's economy. Local sections, industrialists, educators, and promoters of chemistry awareness celebrate it nationwide.
The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific organization with a membership of more than 149,000 chemists and chemical engineers worldwide. The American Chemical Society was chartered by a 1937 Act of the U.S. Congress.
