Thirty - five student teachers and ten post-baccalaureate students received the education pin for completing the certification program. Begun in 1993 for undergraduate students, the Education pinning ceremony has extended now to include post-baccalaureate students who have completed requirements for certification. The pin is symbolic of the faith that UMHB has in the students as they leave the university to pursue their careers.
Two graduating seniors spoke during the ceremony. Student teachers, Delana Brewer and Elizabeth Reed, reflected on their experiences in the field of education.
Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, dean of the College of Education, served as Master of Ceremonies. Dr. Robert Holland, professor, College of Education, offered the invocation and Dr. Bill Townsend, vice-president of external relations, and Carolyn Owens, associate professor of Education and chair of the Department of Education, extended their congratulations to the students. Dr. Austin Vasek, director of graduate program for the Department of Education, closed the ceremony with the benediction.
