Thirty-eight graduates participated in the Pinning Ceremony. Joining them for the ceremony were their families, friends and underclassmen.
Dr. Linda Pehl, dean of the College of Nursing, pinned each graduate. A nursing program's pin is unique to the school. The UMHB pin has been the same design since the first class graduated from the Scott and White Training School in 1904. The colors were changed when the program was moved to the university and became a BSN program, but the basic design and size are the same. Today's nursing pin has become a distinctive mark of nursing excellence and service to others.
Members of the graduating class participated in various parts of the ceremony. Laura Gillaspie, class chaplain, offered the invocation. Ashley Miehle gave the benediction for the ceremony. A Special Reading was read by faculty member, Mrs. Christi Emerson which was then followed by a special rose ceremony.
The guest speakers for this semesters' Pinning Ceremony were Carroll and Cindy Adcock, both R.N. Alumni of the College of Nursing and parents of Charla Adcock, a member of the graduating class. Carroll Adcock has worked at Scott & White Hospital primarily in the intensive care areas, both medical and surgical. In 1998 however he made a change from adult clients to become the supervisor of the subspecialty pediatric clinic where he was supervisor for the operation of 12 pediatric subspecialty areas. He currently serves as Nurse Clinician in the Scott & White Cardiology Department. Cindy Adcock began her career with adult clients on the general medical/surgical units at Scott & White, but in the mid 80's also turned to the pediatric population and became the evening Charge Nurse in the Pediatric Clinic. She continues to work in the General Pediatric Clinic at Scott & White. Both nurses have served on a variety of major practice committees. They have also been involved with various pediatric camps in the region and are active members in their church.
During the ceremony, outstanding graduates were recognized and given awards. The Golden Cross Award was given to Nicole Meine-Nielsen, the student displaying a "Christian Attitude" in all he/she does. The Purple Heart Award was given to Jennifer Boelter, the student who displays "caring and compassion to patients, peers and faculty."
The Clinical Excellence award which "exemplifies outstanding ability in the clinical setting", was presented to Heidi Dexter. Kristin McGilvray received the Mack and Leora Duce Mark of Excellence Award, which is based on Scholarship, Citizenship, and Professional Leadership. The Academic Achievement Award is presented to the student with the highest grade average in all the nursing courses. The award was earned by Heidi Dexter and Lauren Mathiews who had the same score.
The recipient of the Laura Cole Award was also Heidi Dexter. This award was established in 1972 in honor of the late Anna Laura Cole who was the Director of Nursing at Scott & White Hospital from 1933-1969. The award was designed to recognize the graduate who is a member of the Nurses Students Association, has demonstrated leadership in organizational and extracurricular activities, community spirit, and maintained at least a 3.0 GPA in the nursing courses.
