World Renowned Soprano Showcased at the Hillman Visiting Artist Series

Cheryl ParrishBelton, Texas - The Department of Music at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor continues its stellar season of the Hillman Visiting Artist Series with world renowned soprano, Cheryl Parrish, in Hughes Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2008. Parrish will perform works from the art song tradition including sets by Claude Debussy, Hugo Wolf, and a special set that centers about the theme of Ellis Island. Dr. Michelle Schumann, award-winning pianist and associate professor of music at UMHB, will perform with Parrish.

Parrish, a native Texan has performed in major operatic and recital venues around the world. She has been seen on television in "Pavarotti Plus! Live from Lincoln Center" and "Vienna through the Eyes of Schubert" for Japanese Television in Osaka. She has appeared at the San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera, Zurich Opera, Opera Köln, Maggio Musicale, Santa Fe Opera and many more. She has appeared with the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra, among others.
Parrish is a graduate of Baylor University and did post-graduate studies at the University of North Texas in Denton and Di Hochschüle für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria with Dr. Erik Werba. She also studied in France with famed soprano Regine Crespin. She is a tremendous favorite of the Austin Lyric Opera and as their Director of Vocal Lyric Opera and served as their Director of Vocal and Musical Studies. Parrish, of Austin, is on the faculty of Texas State University in San Marcos.

The Hillman Visiting Artist Recital Series is underwritten by The Helen Frances Hillman Fund for Scholarly Exchange. The fund was established in 1999 by Dr. Jimmye S. Hillman in honor of his wife, Helen Frances Smith Hillman, Mary Hardin-Baylor Class of 1946. The fund was designed to foster scholarly exchange at UMHB, particularly in the area of fine arts, music and languages.
