04/23/08

Bawcom Silver BeaverBelton, Texas - Dr. Jerry Bawcom, President of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, was awarded the Boy Scouts of America highest council volunteer award, the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth on Thursday, April 17, at the Longhorn Council Award Banquet,

The award was recommended by Michele Drake, Roundtable Chair, and Bennett Byther, District Executive, both of the Chisholm Trail District, and approved by the Longhorn Council selection committee and the National Council of BSA.

Dr. Bawcom began his Scouting career in 1952 as a Cub Scout, in Boy Scouts achieved the rank of Eagle, and served many years as a volunteer with the South Plains Council, the Longhorn Council, the Heart of Texas Council and the Chisholm Trail District.

As District Chair for 2006-08 of the Chisholm Trail District he was also awarded the District Award of Merit. Dr. Bawcom's mother was his Cub Scout leader, and his dad was his Boy Scout and Explorer leader.

Dr. Bawcom and his twin brother, Terry, achieved the rank of Eagle together, and along with their dad were together awarded Vigil Honors in Scouting's camper honor society, the Order of the Arrow, perhaps the only time in Scouting history where three from one family were so honored.
