Student's journey to university takes unexpected turn from UT

In high school, many athletes  dream of being signed by a major university. But for some, it’s not just where you play, but with whom.

Last season, Matt Caskey, a junior guard in his first season as a Crusader,  was looking forward to becoming a University of Texas Longhorn after graduating from Temple College.

However, a simple invitation from a friend would change the direction of his collegiate career.

“I was accepted (to UT) and everything, but then I started coming up here with my roommates to play in open gym. I just really enjoyed playing with all the players from UMHB,” he said.

Caskey’s interest in basketball started when he was 6 years old. As he grew, so did his ambition, but he did not reach his aspirations overnight.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play college basketball, but it’s also something that I have worked extremely hard for. Countless hours have been spent in the gym to get me where I am today,” he said.

Caskey knows that he is in the latter stages of his eligibility and wanted to make the best of the time he has left.

“It has really made me appreciate basketball more and not take it for granted,” he said. “I realize that I only have a couple of years to play competitive basketball, I thank the Lord every day for that (time), and just want to play up to my potential every day.”

Caskey’s athleticism grabs the attention of the audience watching in the stands.

“I feel like he has brought urgency to the team,” senior management major and Couch Cru leader, Dawson Barksdale said. “He’s creative and fun to watch—kind of like Steve Nash with highlights.”

Caskey feels honored to play for such a well-known squad.

“I was very excited, playing for one of the top teams in the nation. How can you not be excited?” he said.

Caskey has already had some memorable moments while playing on the team and has experience the value of teamwork.

“One of the biggest moments I have had so far is beating Mississippi College earlier in the year because it let me know just how good our team is when everyone plays like they can,” Caskey said.

Teammates believe he is an exceptional player and an important addition to the  team.

Current member and junior exercise and sports science major, Michael Ivey, said, “He has been one of the primary ball handlers and has done a great job filling the role of Kevin Guyden from last year.”

Caskey’s former and present team members have been encouraging to his basketball success and are important in his life.

“The team has accepted me and my teammates from Temple, and the students have given us an unbelievable amount of support,” he said. “They have been great, and we all really appreciate (it) and hope that it will continue to grow as the season goes on.”
