Get to Know UMHB:  Traditions

Robing

Although the specific origin of the robing ceremony is not known, it is believed it may have been held as early as 1902.  Initially, the event was held as part of graduation weekend.  The juniors and seniors marched to the lawn in front of Wilson Administration Building (where Sanderford Administration Complex now stands), carrying a chain of daisies prepared by the sophomores and formed an outline of their class year.  During the ceremony, seniors placed their academic regalia on juniors, symbolizing the passing of student leadership.  Juniors were then allowed for the first time to sing the alumni/senior song, "Up With The Purple."  In 1983, the ceremony became part of a chapel service, now known as Robing Chapel, where the traditions of exchanging regalia and the singing of the song continue.
