Police Authority and Interagency Relationships

Police Authority

UMHB police officers are certified as peace officers by the State of Texas, commissioned by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and have the same rights and powers as other duly certified peace officers in the State of Texas. Upon request of a UMHB police officer, a person is required to identify himself/herself. Campus Police Officers are responsible for all law enforcement functions occuring on campus. The university police department is also responsible for ensuring that all parking rules and regulations are enforced in accordance with the University's Parking and Traffic Regulations. UMHB officers are authorized to make arrest, issue citations, boot, and/or tow vehicles that are in violation of parking regulations. Their jurisdiction covers all of Bell County.

The UMHB Department of Public Safety has direct telephone and/or radio contact with the Belton Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services. These agencies respond immediately any time their assistance is needed. Our interagency agreement with the Belton Police Department ensures that we work together as required. We also maintain close working relationships with other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

These working relationships with other area law enforcement agencies also ensures criminal activity and alcohol violations at off-campus sites are reported to the Department of Public Safety.

Reporting Crimes and Emergencies

To report an emergency or crime in progress, call 295-5555 or 911 from any phone.  Stay on the line so that the dispatcher can get all the information necessary.  We will respond to all emergency calls by sending an officer to the location of the call.

For non-emergency police services, call (254) 295-5555.  The UMHB Department of Public Safety is located at 816 College Street.

On Patrol

UMHB officers patrol the campus day and night, either on foot, on bicycle or in marked white patrol units, marked with the UMHB Police logo in purple and gold.
