Career Services for Students

Special Events

Several times a year, special programs, seminars, and events are held.  Special Events

Part-Time Jobs

The Career Services Center maintains most current postings on the UMHB Job Postings section of this web site.  In addition we keep a notebook of available part-time jobs.  It lists businesses looking for part-time help, job descriptions and requirements, hours, wages, and person to contact at the place of business.  Every week, the C.S.C issues a "JOBS" list which is posted on various bulletin boards around campus.

Full-Time Jobs

The Career Services Center maintains most current full-time job openings on the UMHB Job Postings section of this web site.  In addition, binders are in the resource area of the Career Center.  These are include teaching positions, (public and private school positions and elementary- through college- and university-level positions) business, government, and social services (including corporate, federal, and state government, and health and social services positions).  Job applications are on file for a number of school districts and state and federal jobs.

Credentials

For an extremely small fee, the Career Services Center will help you establish a file for your credentials.  This is especially vital to you since in it is placed your biographical sheet, transcripts, letters of reference, copies of commendations and recognitions, resume (of your own composition), and other materials you desire to use in order to impress a prospective employer.  It is maintained for you indefinitely and mailed to whomever you wish to have a copy, and a permanent record is kept which lists when and to whom it has been sent.

Resume Workshops

These are offered at a variety of times each semester to help you develop an effective resume.  Practical suggestions are made, handouts are utilized, and the group works on solving problems which each of us share during the sessions.  A preliminary resume, pencil and paper should be brought to the workshop.

Individual is available by appointment.

Interview Skills Seminars

These are offered at a variety of times each semester to help you prepare for that critical job interview. Topics covered include questions most frequently asked by interviewers, when the interview actually begins, how to prepare, how to dress and present yourself, how to handle nervous habits, and more.  There are different techniques for business, health services, and public schools.

Career & Self-Assessment

This is an important part of the career planning process. The UMHB Career Services Center in the Mabee Center has installed the ACT Discover Program on line to help in your career decision-making process.  It is a carefully designed career planning program that will provide you with information about yourself.  It will NOT tell you what to do or give you easy answers for your career decision, but it can ease your pain.  The Counseling & Testing Center also has several personality, aptitudes, and interests tests which can be administered.  Most of these are offered to students at no charge.  Appointments and specific information can be obtained by calling 295-4696.
