Registration Policies

Independent Study Courses

All independent study courses must have the written approval of both the department chairperson and the dean before the student will be allowed to register.  This approval may be obtained on the application form and turned in to the Registrar at the time of registration.

Payment

Financial settlement is expected at the time of registration.

Delinquent Charges (Holds)

Students will not be permitted to register for this semester until all charges from previous semesters have been paid.  This includes library fines.

Late Registration

Students registering for courses after the courses have started should be aware that:

  1. There is a late registration fee of $50 charged after the last official date for each semester.
  2. It is the student's responsibility to inquire about all missed assignments, tests, etc.
  3. Some courses have attendance policies under which absences are counted from the first scheduled class day, NOT from the day the student actually registers for the course.
  4. Tuition refunds are calculated based on the first scheduled class day, NOT on the day a student actually registers for courses.

Drop/Adds (Schedule Change)

Students who fail to process the add/drop, withdrawal, or just stop attending class will remain on the class roll and could receive a failing grade for the course.  Additional information can be located in the Student Handbook or the UMHB Undergraduate Catalog.

Adding a Class:  A student may add a class to their schedule until the last day to register for the semester.  This date is located under the "Last Day to Register" column listed on Semester Dates.

Dropping a Class:  A student may drop a class during the add/drop time during the first weeks of class without a grade.  This date is listed on Semester Dates.  A class dropped after this time, referred to as withdrawing from a class, will receive a grade of W if the student withdraws prior to or on the Last Day to Drop With a W.  Any student who withdraws after this time will receive a grade of WP/Q.

Begining Monday, January 14, there is a fee of $5.00 for each Drop and each Add.  Please note that if a class is dropped after the first class day and another class is added, you will be required to pay additional tuition.

Withdrawal Procedure

Those students finding it necessary to withdraw from the university must personally clear through the Office of the Registrar.  Undergraduate students should begin the withdrawal process in the Registrar's Office, and graduate students should begin at the Graduate School office. Students who fail to process a withdrawal or just stop attending class will remain on the class roll and could receive a failing grade for the course.  See the Student Handbook or the Catalog for additional information.

Vehicle Registration

When applying for a vehicle parking permit at registration (required for on-campus parking), the following information is required:

  • Vehicle license plate number
  • Vehicle make, model and color

Permits valid August 16 - August 15, and all students who register must obtain a new vehicle parking permit during registration.

Veterans

You may obtain the required forms for requesting use of your VA benefits from the Office of the Registrar.  The VA Certifying Official ifor Chapter 31 (Voc. Rehab) is Lillie Lowery and for all other VA receipients is Debbie Beaty.  These forms should be completed as soon as you have registered for a particular semester.  As long as there is not a calendar month break in your attendance, you will receive pay between semesters.

Transfer of Courses

Courses that you plan to take at another college or university for transfer to UMHB should be approved in advance by your advisor, your department chair, and the UMHB Registrar's Office
