Advising
All of our Biology majors are assigned a Biology faculty member for advising purposes. This faculty member is your primary advisor during your time at UMHB. You will go to them for pre-registration advising, drop/adds, degree audit preparation, discussing future career plans... essentially almost all your advising needs.
If you are a freshman or sophomore and have not talked with a Biology advisor yet, do so immediately!
Many of our Biology students desire to attend a professional school after graduation from UMHB. If you are one of these students, there are several of the science faculty (members of the Health Professions Advisory Committee) who can give you additional information about the specific prerequisites of the professional program you are interested in. You should talk with the appropriate committee member to make sure that you have all the information necessary to maximize your chances of admission to the professional school of your choice. Their job is to keep you abreast of the most recent information concerning admission to your chosen professional program.
Always make sure that your primary Biology advisor is aware of any prerequisite courses you need to add to your degree plan. Most of the time they already are, but this is your future and you need to be responsible in making sure you are on the right track.
Pre-Advising Instructions
In order to make your advising experience as efficient and pleasant as possible, the Biology faculty would like for you to do a little work on your own before coming in for advising. We realize that you may have questions about what you should take and we want to answer those for you during the advising time, but many times you already know what courses you should take next and it is simply a matter of figuring out how to schedule those classes so as to avoid conflicts and get the schedule you think is best.
- First, you should sign up for an advising time with your advisor. There are advising schedule notebooks for each of the Biology advisors in their respective office areas. Be sure you are signing up for a time with the correct advisor, and put your phone number down by your name so we can easily get hold of you if there needs to be a schedule change.
- A day before your advising appointment, download the Pre-Advising Worksheet and fill it out as completely as you can. This requires you to go to UMHB's online course schedule to find out what is offered and when it is offered. You will also be able to see if a class is full already. If you look at this information too far ahead of your advising appointment, classes may be full that weren't full when you first looked. Even if you are not sure what classes you should register for, you should still fill out the Pre-Advising Worksheet as much as possible. This will make the advising process go a lot smoother.
- Download the Blank Schedule and write in your classes (in pencil) to be sure that there are no time conflicts.
- Bring the Pre-Advising Worksheet and the Blank Schedule with you to your advising appointment.
