Matt Smith's academic research is in the field of critical graphic design, especially graphic design as knowledge production. Since 2010, the books he has published under the imprint Are Not Books & Publications (arenotbooks.com) have been exhibited in conference, trade show, gallery, and museum contexts.
Matt has worked as Design Manager for the University of Illinois Press, and senior designer for Intervarsity Press. He has designed books, catalogs, covers, and jackets for clients including Stanford University Press and the Snite Museum of Art. His art direction and design have been recognized by HOW magazine and the Association of American University Presses.
