What is a Bachelors in Art
The Bachelor of Arts degree combines the elements of a traditional liberal arts education with a broad study of art and art history. Students have the opportunity to develop their artistic abilities in studio courses, become familiar with trends and styles of art through the centuries, and learn the basics of graphic design.
Why should I choose to study Art?
Art majors learn techniques for creative problem solving, effective communication, and critical thinking- all of which are important to success in a wide range of professions.
What are some courses I will take while studying a bachelors of art?
UMHB has given me the opportunity to grow into myself, figure out what I want to do with my future, and have a family to rely on. The professors have helped me fall in love with art and help me become a better artist in many ways.
Joseph Velasquez received his BFA from UMHB in 2003 and went on to receive his MFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the co-founder of Drive By Press, an on-site live t-shirt printing company that hand carves woodblocks for both t-shirts and posters and prints them live. He is also an Assistant Professor of Art at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Joseph has been published by Cannonball Press, Brooklyn, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. In addition to juried exhibitions and professional portfolio exchanges, Velasquez has served as curator of exhibitions at the Sling Shot Gallery, Madison, WI.

Why study a bachelors in art at UMHB?
The Baugh Center for the Visual Arts offers art majors well-equipped studios, beautiful gallery space, and plenty of areas for students to hang out and work.
Studio classes are limited to 15 students, so you always have a chance to ask questions and get feedback from your professors.
Art faculty members are professional artists who bring years of teaching experience to their classes.
Art majors may take part in study abroad trips to cities such as Rome, Florence, Venice, Paris, and Prague. Scholarships are available to help cover the cost of travel and tuition.
