When people hear the word accountant, they often picture someone sitting alone in a dimly lit office, buried in spreadsheets and calculators. But step into the accounting department at UMHB, and that stereotype quickly disappears. Here, laughter echoes through the hallways, and students crowd into professors’ offices to chat, grab snacks and swap stories. It’s a community full of energy and purpose – and at its core are three professors who make accounting fun, meaningful and grounded in faith.
“People might be surprised that we’re accountants,” said Dr. Vicky Johnson with a laugh. “We’re kind of loud, and we’re always laughing. We’re not what people picture when they think of accountants.”
Johnson, along with Dr. Jerome Lockett and Dr. Lisa DeLuze ‘03, leads UMHB’s accounting program, a tight-knit, thriving group of students who will one day serve as CPAs, auditors, entrepreneurs and servant-leaders. Together, the trio has built a program known not only for its academic rigor and professional success, but also for its joyful, student-centered approach that turns the “stuffy accountant” myth upside down.
