The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor School of Humanities held its eighth annual back-to-school bash Thursday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event, put together by Dr. Jacky Dumas, associate dean of humanities, was open to staff and students involved in the College of Humanities and celebrated all aspects of the humanities, from English to media studies.
This year’s bash was themed around 1980s pop culture and included trivia contests based on songs and movies from the decade. Attendees were encouraged to dress up in their best ‘80s attire with a contest held for best outfit. The winner was Rachel King, who dressed as Bruce Springsteen. In between prizes, students were welcome to play board games and enjoy food from Chick-fil-A, Little Caesars, Taco Bell and Panda Express.
“We decided to do an ‘80s theme because this was the eighth time we’ve done (the back-to-school bash),” Dr. Dumas said. “1980s pop culture is close to a lot of the staff, and I saw that it was for a lot of the students as well.”
Attending the party were professors and students from The Bells staff, Cru Films, and the English club. Dr. Laura Bedwell, head of this year’s London Studies program, made an appearance and announced an interest meeting on August 20. English club president Emma Smith announced that the first meeting of the school year will be held on August 21.
