Direct Loan Exit Counseling

Our office has received notification from the Registrar’s Office that you will be graduating this December.

If you are not graduating, please contact the financial aid office ASAP.

We have determined that you received a Federal Direct Student Loan or a Stafford Student Loan during your academic pursuit. The Department of Education requires loan recipients to complete an exit counseling before they graduate.

To avoid having a hold placed on your academic transcripts, please complete this requirement before, January 5th.

Step by Step Instructions:

• Before starting this process, you should have on hand the following items:
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Next of kin information, including address and phone number
  • Two additional references, including address and phone number
  • Employer name, address and phone number if you are employed
• Please visit nslds.ed.gov.
  • You must log into the website with your FSA ID and Password to receive credit.

• Select “FINANCIAL AID REVIEW”
  • Under “Type of Loan” heading, your Federal Student Loans will be listed in numerical order.
  • Click on “Loan Number” for information, including amount of loan, interest accrued, name, address, and phone number for Loan Servicer.
  • Check each individual “Loan Number” to determine if you have more than one loan servicer.
    • Multiple loan servicers will require a loan payment be made to each servicer.
    • Loan consolidation information will be provided during your Exit Counseling Session.
  • Go back to the NSLDS "Home Page."
• Select “EXIT COUNSELING”
  • You will be redirected to www.studentloans.gov
    • FSA ID and Password is required for log in.
• Select “Complete Loan Counseling”
  • Choose “Exit Counseling” option
• Follow instructions for completion of the “Exit Counseling”.

All completed Exit Counselings will arrive to UMHB on Monday of each week. Upon receiving the counseling, your documents page will be updated accordingly.
