Proof of Citizenship or Eligible Non-Citizen Status
The US Department of Education (ED) processes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with records from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to confirm citizenship or eligible non-citizen status. Your information did not match one of the department’s records. As a result of the mismatch, ED requires us to collect further documentation to verify your status as either a U.S. Citizen or an Eligible Non-citizen before we can proceed with awarding financial aid.
Document Submission Policy
- Provisional Awarding with Digital Copies: We can now provisionally award financial aid using a digital copy (scan or clear photograph) of your required documentation. This allows us to process your file and offer an aid package more quickly.
- Original Document Requirement: While a digital copy is sufficient for initial awarding, you must provide the original, physical document in person to the Financial Aid Office before your aid can be finalized and disbursed.
- Accepted Documents: U.S. Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport or Passport Card (unexpired), Certification of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, or a copy of Form FS-240 (Consular Report of Birth Abroad) or FS-545 (Certificate of Birth Issued aby a Foreign Service Post), Permanent Resident Card, etc.
If you are unable to visit our office, you can make a copy of your original document and send it to our office. If you choose this option, you will also need to have an affidavit signed in front of a notary. Below is a link to the affidavit and the financial aid office contact information.
